ONE MORE TRIP BEFORE SCHOOL

28 08 2010

School starts September 14 for me. That leaves just a little over two weeks of summer and freedom left, which means one last bash with my best friend of 18 years, Briana, before hitting the books. Briana and I have travelled before,  first trip when we were 11 years old was a tour of Italy with my family. Then again when we were 16 to Mexico, and earlier this year again, when she met me in Miami after Semester at Sea docked in Fort Lauderdale. Where we are going now actually has a little story to it….

Once upon a time after a young girl on Semester at Sea visited lands far-far away, she realized she really didn’t know much about her own home, Canada. This allowed the girl to dream of her own mystical land, and get in touch with home. After all, home is where the heart is… and her heart was in travel.

She heard from many how beautiful Canada was. Locals from her travels kept reassuring her of their own love for her country. One particular woman in China, a merchant who was trying to sell her a purse was particularly keen on “ripping the girl off”. After a session of bardering the Chinese woman asked where the girl was from. She exclaimed she was a Canuck from Canada. The Chinese woman’s face lit up as she grabbed the girls arm and pulled her aside. The Chinese woman took a look around to see if anyone was looking and then opened up her vest to reveal a collection of Canadian pins and memorabilia from the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. She whispered, “I love Canada”. The Chinese woman then sold her the fake Michael Kors bag for a reasonable three dollars.

After travelling back home, the girl became ashamed to have only seen a fraction of her country, and yet seen so much of other people’s countries. So she made a point to travel cross-country to the wonderful land of British Colombia; Vancouver specifically and celebrate her country with her best friend.

So that is where I am going on Monday at 7 am. I am taking a flight across my own country to explore the beauty I’ve heard so much about in Vancouver. I will be house-hopping with a few friends and hopefully making an impression on Vancouver, or at least Vancouver will make an impression on me.

HEY, HOW WAS NEW YORK?

25 08 2010

I am home from another mini getaway… I have to admit, I didn’t even plan this 5 day trip to New York. It just sort of happened and came together in less than 48 hours like most of my trips have been lately. It was Kara’s birthday, my beloved friend from Brooklyn, New York who was my roommate on Semester at Sea and who I traveled with to the Himalaya’s in India this past June.

It’s been a crazy ride with her, and to be honest this weekend in New York was the most normal thing we’ve done. I sat in a car with her while she was driving, we went to the movies, vegetated on the couch one day watching True Blood. It was weird being normal with her. Not right.

The weekend went by slowly, with a road trip to her country house in the Hamptons. This was essentially in one word: Glam. Each house we passed seemed bigger and larger than the last one! The weekend was passed sitting by the pool, or in the hot tub with a cold Corona soaking in the sun. Until of course it began to down pour, and we had to drive back to the city.

It was an amazing weekend for the pure fact that I got to spend it with my best friends from Semester at Sea. Our own little reunion!

PHOTOGRAPHY: ZEN WITH BUDDHA

17 08 2010

The Largest Seated Bronze Buddha in the world is found in Hong Kong on Lantau Island. He sit’s on top of a large mountain overlooking the Pacific Ocean staring at Japan. The Buddha’s large, droopy ears are meant as a symbol for a great listener, his big belly is for fortune and luck while his kind eyes and welcoming hands bring you peace.

WHAT TO BRING WHILE BACKPACKING INDIA

10 08 2010

Having been to India twice this year, for a total of six weeks combined, I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what India puts a person through, physically, mentally and emotionally.  People have conversations all the time about how they would react in certain situations, such as, would thy really jump and take a bullet for someone? Would they bail on a friend out of fear in an incredibly difficult situation? etc…  The same goes for those conversations of “would you rather”. Would you rather sleep on a subway floor, or eat food off of some one else’s dirty plate?

India answers all of these questions, and on your own path to self-discovery, India will not only tell you ‘what your made of’, but it will damn well slap you in the face with it. Of course it depends on how rugged of a traveler you are. If you enjoy luxury, chauffeurs, and “white people”, this isn’t the right blog for you… but I can admit, that luxury, chauffeurs and the main population of touristy white folk is really affordable in India. If you enjoy, for lack of a better phrase: “Roughing it”. Then listen up, this is what you will need to have with you at all times while backpacking through out India.

1) Purell. On Semester at Sea, our doctor referred to our hand sanitizer aboard the ship as Little Brother Purell. He would encourage us to stop by and give Little Brother Purell a nice slap. So take Little Brother Purell with you everywhere you go. Unless you want to buy water to wash your hands, you wont find a lot of it. Dirt seems to stick to you and even after a few showers, you will still find it caked in the creases of your elbows and in between your toes. Sanitation standards are different in India than what we are accustomed too, and in certain areas, you will find your self constantly dodging cow dung, wads of spit, pigs and piles of garbage in corners. Your hands will be touching everything, including wiping all the sweat, grease and dirt that seems to be permanently stuck to your face. Sanitize yourself, and keep your stomach and immune system happy.

2) Toilet Paper. It took me a while to figure this one out… but the Indian culture frowns upon toilet paper. They see it as dirty instead of clean. They usually do like the Europeans and rinse themselves off after with water, so they think we’re just mushing everything around with the ‘wipe method’. Therefore, unless you’re staying in tourist hotels, and big cities like Delhi or Agra, you should pack a roll and keep it in your day pack. Camping stores have toilet paper-to-go. It’s compact and comes with its own carrying case.

3) Ugly shoes. I repeat- UGLY SHOES. I have never returned home from India with the same shoes. I don’t understand how, but India did a number on them.. My converse bottoms fell off, my flip-flops wore a hole in the ball of the foot. By the end of my stay, I was walking on the road barefoot with only how protection on the upper part of my feet.  The smell never quite leaves your shoes either, no matter how many times you wash them. So bring a pair you’re not to fond off, and you wont care that you’ll most likely have to leave them at the hostel by the end of your stay.

4) Face cloth. It may sound wierd but just a tiny small one to keep in your pocket, even a handkerchief works wonders. When your hot you can get it wet and put it on your neck, you can wipe the dirt and sweat off of your face and chest with it. You can even clean down your plate before you eat. It is miraculous.

5) Sleeping bag liner. India is too hot for a sleeping bag, but I would consider it suicide if you didn’t bring a liner to sleep in. Those hostel beds are an excuse for even the smallest version of clean. Sure they may be soft, but I would never trust those brown sheets and lumpy pillow. No matter how many times you ask them to change your sheets, their version of clean still consists of brown marks and hair from the previous tenants. (Of course, this does not apply to all hotels and hostels, but it’s nice to be weary of it).

Of course there are other things you should know, such as covering your knees and shoulders in India unless you want to extremely disrespectful to the culture, pay an extra fine for a cover up in certain temples or just look like a plain old basic symbol for sex. Be careful.

Otherwise, happy travels and if your going to India soon, I would love to know where your heading!

PHOTOGRAPHY: INDIA

4 08 2010

It was just a pit stop in Nanital, India. A thriving city off of tourism where backpackers are scarcely scene, yet the tourism from Indian residents allows this city to have everything from horse back riding through the mountains to it’s own adventure park. There were circus clowns, men walking around with balloons and cotton candy, with a lake right in the middle of it all as the main attraction. There was a man sleeping on the steps to an abandoned old temple that was locked up and left unkept.
